First the good:
I was able to heat up and fill 3 Coco Mazaya square charcoals on my gas range and place them into the holder. It held the heat extremely well for approximately 3-4 hour session. I had to wait a few minutes before I could take a draw on the hookah but the shisha heated up adequately. Initially there was a strange silicone taste during the first few drags, but it disappeared after about 4 minutes of usage. This thing produced HUGE clouds of smoke even til the very end and never once introduced a charred taste to my Al Fahker guava shisha throughout my session- even til the end. I am very impressed. It's fairly easy to clean: warm soapy water, and steel wool seems to work best and scraping the charred residue (after it had cooled).
My only gripe, is the "silicone" grab handle is either not real silicone or it's too thin because it transferred the heat from the holder through the sleeve and I almost burned myself had I not let go in time. I will just have to order a new silicone handle holder and MacGyver it on there instead.
This is an awesome product, for those of you that are complaining because it doesn’t come with directions....do you need instructions for how to accomplish simple everyday tasks? It’s as easy as putting the shisha in the bowl (don’t over pack it, the shisha should be lose) place the bottom portion of the heat management on, place your coals on, and then place the lid on. Do not use the quick light coals, yeah they are a tad faster but it’s not worth it. I used to only use them because I thought the other ones were too difficult but if you buy a burner, set the coals on and prep your hookah, the coals are ready by the time you set everything up and they last so much longer. If you are not getting enough smoke, start a drag and listen for air leaks around your bowl. There is a lip that the heat management portion should sit in to seal it up. Make sure you don’t have too much water in your base, it should be an inch above the metal pipe. I use two coconut coals and get plenty of smoke and each bowl lasts about 1 1/2-2 hours with two people. Make sure the holes in your bowl aren’t completely covered with the shisha. I have been using this for about 6 months and have had zero issues with the silicon.
This is the second one I have ordered as I liked the first one very much. It works as advertised. Plus, the hookah is cleaner, no direct charcoal on the aluminum foil. I also ordered the coconut coal which is cleaner and healthier. With the combination of coconut shell coal and this product the smoking experience is much better, easier to set up and managers well. One tip, I also use aluminum foil inside the bowl before placing the hookah tobacco in the bowl, keeps the bowl cleaner and easy clean up at the end. I purchased the second one for my other hookah which I use when having friends over. Hope this review helps.

So I ordered this a while ago and finally got a chance to take it out for a spin last night. This is THE best hookah bowl I've ever used!! Be aware that when you load the coals in for the first time you have to give it like 6-10 minutes for the top portion of the set up to get piping hot. For as great of a smoke you get from this it's such a minimal thing to wait that initial time.

The HMD is set to fit the bowl it comes with perfectly. I must admit that I didn't expect much from the bowl included with the HMD, but it has surprised me on several occasions now. The bowl is big and can fit between 30-40g of shisha (just finished a 4 hour session with the thing); the HMD keeps the coals going for a longtime (3 natural coals lasted around 2 1/2 hours), and seems to be made of actual aluminum, or so I'm told. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking to get a Kaloud Lotus but can't foot the bill. I have both and have compared both. The Lotus is better, but this thing isn't far behind, and they look almost exactly alike. The bowl is rather impressive as well. I doubt it'll become my go-to bowl, but I'll definitely keep it in the rotation.
I hope that I can help somebody that knew as little about this as I did. First, the hookah bowl is much larger than I thought it would be. It also comes with a diffuser for the stem of your hookah. This disperses the air into smaller bubbles making it smoother and more filtered. My first bowl was burnt and the whole thing felt unstable. I learned that there are two ridges on the bowl. The coal holder actually sits on the lowest ridge and feels very secure when pressed into the groove. Make sure that your tobacco isn't above the lowest ridge on the bowl. It should sit about an 1/8 of an inch below the ridge. Once the tobacco is sorted, put the coal holder in place, and situate on your hookah. Put 3 coals (coco nara is great) in and cover with the top. ***Once the coals are in, do not touch the metal, even with pot holders. It will burn them. Fortunately, once you get the heat control adjusted to your liking, you don't have to mess with it to get one of the best smokes I've ever had. This is a great product and I feel that some just don't know how to use it properly. I hope that this helps someone as new as I am.
I will answer the questions I had, maybe someone else will have them too.
Will it fit my hookah? This seems to be designed for "big" hookahs, if you own a cheap chinese one, this will not fit.
How does it smoke? Very well actually, the design of the bowl allows nice air flow and think smoke
Will it melt? Not at all
How much tobacco will it hold? About half package of the tiny packages.
What about the metal thingy? It is made of aluminium, holds heat, easy to clean and fits 4 coconut coals(the square ones).
So why 3 stars? Honestly just because the silicon got stained and looks nasty now. I will try to contact the seller to see if this is expected.
UPDATE: Seller came back to me and explained the stain is a normal thing and there is nothing to be worried about. He was nice enough to offer replacing my blue bowl, so I suggest to get the black one.
Wow. Clean smoke! The shisha smokes very uniformly. As designed, the "moat" around the central hole keeps a puddle of wet honey/molasses, which wicks throughout the shisha. Simply pack your shisha around it, and don't let it go so high it touches the metal.
Here are some pictures of a "small bowl" I packed for myself. Would pack more if other people were joining.
The silicone does not get hot enough to worry about chemical outgassing. Not sure why these aren't vastly more popular.
If you read academic papers on "tobacco pyrolysis temperature and mutagenicity", you'll see that keeping temperatures low also reduces the mutagenicity of the smoke, despite what biased sources with anti-smoking agendas may say. While this reduction is a fantastic thing, there are certainly still risks to this otherwise enjoyable activity.
In my informed opinion, it would be unsafe to *not* use a device like this.
However I did burn myself on the hot metal accidentally brushing it. So be careful.
Product was just what I expected. Fit my hookah snug with no air gaps and pulled like a boss. I used this bowl last night for the first time from 6pm to 11:00pm and only had to change out coals twice, and that's only because we let it sit for dinner. My only complaint is that the rubber handle on the lotus gets a little hotter than i expected, so you have to grab from the tip (no heat on the actual bowl though, even with 3 coals baking). The diffuser is awesome!! My girlfriend was trying to take a nap and was getting annoyed from the noise of the bubbles... once i strapped that diffuser on, instant noise cancellation! Wish it came with instructions though, i had to YouTube how to make it fit on my down stem.
